Destiny of VFA end to be contemplated, yet choice still in hands of Duterte — DFA chief

The administration will examine potential situations with respect to the nation's Visiting Forces Agreement with the United States, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro "Teddy Boy" Locsin Jr. said Tuesday, as the underlying half-year cutoff time of the suspension of its annulment looms.

The nation's top representative said he would examine the issue with President Rodrigo Duterte, as the last would eventually settle on an official choice.

"I have an extraordinary, significant regard for the astuteness of my leader… I will talk about it with him, in light of the fact that the choice is forever his," he added.

The DFA suspended on June 1 the forthcoming end of the two-decade military settlement with the US, saying the move was done "considering the political and different advancements in the district." The VFA should be rejected on August 9.

The suspension will keep going for a half year until December and could reach out for another a large portion of a year, as per the strategic note prior shared by Locsin.
